Math that Matters

I believe that Math can be driven by social and environmental changes and justices. Also, I think it is entirely up to the pedagogue to decide whether to touch on the outside factors that are related to Math, or to just teach the basics. I think what the writer tries to do is to move away from the traditional lectures, regular and standard ways of teaching Math and tries to introduce real life situations in math to make it more practical and interesting .   I think the author’s intention is, to show teachers that there are more in teaching Math than what everyone sees on the surface. Math teachers can be incorporating the outside world to Math while teaching in the classrooms; that there are always options in bringing social awareness into their teaching. He also supports his ideas by brining some examples in his book. Even thought, it might  be a bit harder to incorporate social justice into teaching,   in secondary Math classrooms  the topics...

Reflection on Micro Teaching

I believe overall ,the string game went well,as my classmates liked it. However, I do respect and appreciate their commentson having some strings ready before hand so they could start doing the game as I began to teach. This was they would have the chance to learn as I was teach. Now I realize, if I have some activities to teach to my class, I should get enough material for everyone ready in the beginning.

Lesson Plan: String Game 😉

S tring Game Class: EDCP 342A Date: October 18, 2017 Grade : Teacher Candidates 😊 Duration: 10 min Class Profile:          ·      There are 22 TCs in this class, but the game would be taught in a table of 6 Big Ideas            ·   The big idea is to teach them how to play with string to make nice figures/shapes Warm-Up                                                              ·    Give each student in the table a small piece of string and tell them t...

Battleground Schools

This article is very interesting, especially since it is talking about how essential Mathematics is, and how vital has been having a knowledgeable Math teacher in our societies every now and then. After reading the article, I also realized there had been lots of controversies, disagreements and debates around mathematics studies in schools throughout decades.  Things that stopped me and made me think about the article were, it appears that the Mathematical methods and techniques taught in North American schools back then were more like instrumental approaches to the mathematics studies. The article is talking about how fearful and concerned parents were of the fact that how kids would not know the proofs of any math problems, how kids were forced to memorize and learn math concepts without  being proved, and how understanding or comprehension were not focus of math studies back in those days.   What also stuck me  is that ,mathematics used to be very fr...

TPI Result

I scored higher (and the same) in transmission and social reform. As the test was taken before I went for my short practicum, the result might be changed if I will take the survey one more time, however talking about this result; shows that I am enthusiastic about my content and convey that enthusiasm to my students. As for my higher score in my social ref, than apprenticeship, nurturing and especially developmental perspectives of teaching, shows, I believe that, the object of teaching is the collective rather than the individual, and I do believe that class discussions are much more effective than individually ones, at least in some specific subjects.  I was surprised that I did score less than all for developmental perspective as I thought it was very important as well. I think that good teachers must understand how their learners think and reason about the content, and I do believe that content is one of most important aspect of a lesson; however, I ...

Reflection on Eisner, Three curricula all schools teach

By reading through the article, I realized that I did not really know much about the differences between explicit and implicit curriculum before.  The author has truly explained the difference between explicit and implicit curriculum what is formally intended to be taught by a class versus what happens to be taught by an environment. The explicit curriculum refers to intentional instructive techniques. In this curriculum the classes are affected by the schools and are typically include: Math, Science, English… there are some standards, some set goals, text books, and some rules that teachers use to create the classroom.   Whereas in the implicit one, teachers can deliberately change the environment of their classrooms as an intentional learning experience. What stopped me when I was reading about the two curricula was the fact that there is a reward system in the implicit curriculum set up which pushes the students to complete the activities for prizes, regardless the ...

My mathematical Past

I don't have much memories of my interests in   Math  when I started school and  in my primary years, but I  know  that I began liking it once I moved to the middle  school. I remember my grade   7th Math teacher who was really  affectionate , kind and very  hard working ;  she always  spent a lot of time working on each subjects and after the lessons she made sure that we all understood the material before ending the class . She was the one who really made me start enjoying Math  and i nspired me  to think about getting to know Math even more and better . I can not say that I was a genius student in school,  but I was always a good one with fair grades in Math .  However , things have changed once I went to the high school.  Going through the  confusing  teenage years, being  arrogant  and selfish, and not willing to get any help , made me doing very ...
