TPI Result

I scored higher (and the same) in transmission and social reform. As the test was taken before I went for my short practicum, the result might be changed if I will take the survey one more time, however talking about this result; shows that I am enthusiastic about my content and convey that enthusiasm to my students. As for my higher score in my social ref, than apprenticeship, nurturing and especially developmental perspectives of teaching, shows, I believe that, the object of teaching is the collective rather than the individual, and I do believe that class discussions are much more effective than individually ones, at least in some specific subjects.  I was surprised that I did score less than all for developmental perspective as I thought it was very important as well. I think that good teachers must understand how their learners think and reason about the content, and I do believe that content is one of most important aspect of a lesson; however, I would blame this small score on not knowing much about the classroom atmospheres and the students' needs. Good teachers care about their students and understand that some have histories of failure resulting in lowered self-confidence and will provide encouragement and support and as I have scored fairly on the nurturing. And finally, I have scored almost as high as other ones, means that I do believe in being knowledgeable and skilled while teaching and I do agree that “Good teachers are highly skilled practitioners of what they teach.” Again, the results may change in the future.

Comments

  1. Niloo, I don't see any comments from you here about your TPI results. You were supposed to reflect on your interpretation of these results, not just post the scores and bar graph. Please complete this blog post -- or let me know if the comments are somewhere else that I've missed!

Instrumental vs. Relational Understanding

When I was reading  Skemp’s lengthy article, the first thing that triggered my thoughts  and got me stopped for awhile was the fact that I had never thought about understating math distinctively, and by reading the article, I realized that I did learn a lot about relational and instrumental understanding / mathematics and  the difference between them, the  two terms which were completely came  new to me at the beginning of the article. Soon I  realized that; yes, there are in fact two different approaches to the teaching/learning mathematics. Although, I did not know much about the two understating before reading the article, the second thing that stopped me right away  , and it even turned out to be a bit disturbing for me at first ,was remembering about my childhood  mathematics  studies! Having grown in Iran; the place that Math has been considered as the most important subjects of all, we were gett...

Math Fair @ West Point Grey Academy

The math fair we visited at West Point Gray Academy few weeks back, was very interesting for me also different in two ways. One, since in all  other math fairs that I was attending before; my partner and I were supposed to a prepare a math game for the students to play with; we had to explain the game strategy first, guide them through it or give them some hints before they try the games individually or with a friend. We were always observing them, and were writing our observations or reflections on what were going through their minds when trying our games. Whereas in the academy, we were there to play the students math games this time. We were the ones who had to answer to the questions that students had from us. we were supposed to try their games and come up with some responses and answers. I liked the idea that this time in the academy we got the chance to try the games without explaining and describing the games to the kids. The other reason that made the fair distinguish...

Personal Reflection on the Course

When I started this course, I did not have any assumptions of what the course would be like. Since I didn’t even know the meaning of the word “Pedagogy” before coming to the department, I did not have any ideas of what the course would be talking about. I learned a lot in this course; for one I can name of the very interesting relationship between math and art. that I saw in this course. I had never thought about the nice connection that the two are having.  In particular, in the project that I worked with two other classmates, Sierpinski Squared, by contacting the artist , we realized how  math and art world are inseparable .  Now I can see why some mathematicians, specially the very smart ones, also have a back ground in art: music, poetry, movies, theater or even painting/drawing. I can see the lovely correlation between math and art very clearly now. This course made me also think about my educational philosophy and pedagogy, made me more realized how much I love ...
